Is there a family leave policy for graduate students? If so, describe.

Any GA, fellow, or trainee may request a short-term absence to recover from a personal illness or to bereave the death of an immediate family member. Funded graduate students may also request a leave of absence for a personal serious health condition or to care for an immediate family member with a serious health condition. A funded graduate student may also be eligible for an appointment- and stipend-protected leave associated with the birth or adoption of a child.

Is there family health insurance for graduate students? If so, is it included in the stipend?

Yes. The University pays for 80% of the health insurance costs for funded graduate students (Graduate Teaching Associates, Graduate Research Associates, and Graduate Fellow) and their dependents.

Please describe why someone applying to graduate school who is interested in a female-friendly department should choose your department.

Our department maintains a friendly, supportive, and respectful atmosphere without compromising the quality of graduate education. Collegiality is valued in our department. We strongly encourage students who are admitted to our graduate program to talk with current graduate students about their experiences here. Post-graduation placement of our students is excellent.

Has the institution had a Climate for Women in Physics Site Visit or Gender Equity Conversation?
