Lara Autrey-Rodriguez

Background:

My name is Lara Autrey-Rodriguez and I am 17 years old. I just recently graduated from YES College Preparatory School in Houston, Texas and I will be attending Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut in the fall. As a junior in high school I became enamored with Mr. Wilsons physics class because I could so easily grasp the connection between science and math. I continued to pursue physics in the AP course because I strongly believe that more women should become involved in the science fields, and I want to encourage others as well as prove that women can do it! I was born in Houston on November 23, 1987. My mom is from San Juan, Puerto Rico and my dad is from Alexandria, Louisiana. I have three older brothers and we speak Spanish at home. I have a passion for sports-Basketball and Volleyball- and I love to run everyday. I also enjoy dancing to music ranging from salsa and merengue to reggaeton and hip-hop. During the summer, I taught 8th grade English and a Puerto Rican elective at the Breakthrough Summerbridge program in Houston. I also worked as an intern doing research at flea markets and analyzing the Hispanic market for a future Mercado business. Overall, I am a very determined young woman that likes to be active and involved within her community and pushes to get things done.
