Katepalli Sreenivasan

Citation:

"For his commitment to mentoring students and junior colleagues and his significant contributions to fostering international collaborations and promoting the advancement and education of early career scientists from the developing world."

Background:

Katepalli R. Sreenivasan joined Yale University in 1979 on its teaching faculty, following his education and post-doctoral work in India, Australia and the Johns Hopkins University. In 2002, he moved to the University of Maryland as the Director of the Institute of Physical Science and Technology. A year and a half later, he took up his current position as the Director of the International Centre for Theoretical Physics in Trieste, Italy, where he also holds the Abdus Salam Research Professorship.

Sreenivasan is a member of the US National Academy of Sciences and the US National Academy of Engineering; Fellow, American Academy of Arts and Sciences and Academy of Sciences for the Developing World; Honorary Fellow, Indian Academy of Sciences and the Indian National Science Academy; Foreign Fellow, African Academy of Sciences; recipient of Distinguished Alumnus Award of the Indian Institute of Science. Among the recognitions that his work has received are Humboldt and Guggenheim Fellowships, Fellowship of APS, ASME and AAAS, Distinguished Scholar Award of the American Chapter of the Indian Physics Association, the Otto Laporte Memorial Award of APS, the 2002 Medal in Engineering Sciences from the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World, the International Prize and Medal in the memory of Professors Modesto Panetti and Carlo Ferrari, Academia delle Scienze di Torino, Italy, and the National Order of Scientific Merit Certificate by the Brazilian Government and the Academy of Sciences.

His research interests are primarily in fluid dynamics, but they have also touched on a few other areas of physics.
