Citation:

"For pioneering contributions to the scalable synthesis, materials science and applications of graphene and graphene derivatives."

Background:

Rodney S. Ruoff is making and studying new materials, particularly carbon materials. Some current research efforts are described at cmcm.ibs.re.kr/ . He is a UNIST Distinguished Professor at the Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST) and director of the Center for Multidimensional Carbon Materials (CMCM), an Institute for Basic Science (IBS) Center at the UNIST campus. Prior to joining UNIST in 2014 he was the Cockrell Family Regents Endowed Chair Professor at the University of Texas at Austin from 2007, and Northwestern University from 2000-2007, where he was John Evans Professor and director of NU’s Biologically Inspired Materials Institute. At this time he has co-authored 470 peer-reviewed publications related to chemistry, physics, materials science, mechanics, and biomedical science, and is a Fellow of the MRS, APS, AAAS, and the Royal Society of Chemistry. Ruoff received the 2014 Turnbull Prize from the MRS and SGL Skakel Award from the American Carbon Society in 2016. For further background on some of his published research see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rodney_S._Ruoff . He earned his B.S. degree in Chemistry with high honors from UT-Austin in 1981 and his Ph.D. in Chemical Physics from UIUC in 1988. He enjoys family, walking and hiking, reading novels and short stories, Latin dancing, and thinking about the future.
