Glenzer

Siegfried Glenzer
Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory

Citation:

"For elegant diagnostics using collective Thomson scattering together with x-ray spectroscopy which greatly advanced the understanding of the complex plasma environment in laser driven hohlraums used in inertial confinement fusion."

Background:

Siegfried Glenzer earned his undergraduate degree in 1990 and his Ph.D. with distinction in 1994 in Plasma Physics from the Department of Physics at the Ruhr-Universit?t-Bochum in Germany. He has been in the United States since 1995, when he first joined the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory into a postdoctoral position. From 1996-1999 he held a term position at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and was a visiting lecturer at the University of California, Berkeley in 1998. Since 1999 he is a career employee and since 2001 the Plasma Physics Group Leader in the National Ignition Facility program at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. Siegfried is a fellow of the American Physical Society and a member of the Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft. His research interests are in the areas of inertial confinement fusion, Thomson scattering, plasma spectroscopy, and laser-plasma interactions. Siegfried has first introduced Thomson scattering to characterize hohlraum plasma conditions and has since then used this technique to study atomic kinetics and plasma waves in high temperature and high-density plasmas. Recently, he has demonstrated spectrally resolved x-ray scattering for temperature and density measurements in solid density plasmas, and he is currently leading a research team performing the first experiments on the National Ignition Facility laser.

Selection Committee:

Y.Y. Lau (Chair), K. (Dennis) Papadopoulos (12/03), Masaaki Yamada (12/03), Ronald Parker (V Chair) (12/04), Alex Friedman (12/04)
