Morteza (Mory) Gharib
California Institute of Technology

Citation:

"In recognition of his seminal contributions to measurement techniques in experimental fluid mechanics, elucidation of governing physical principles in flow-structure interactions and vortex dynamics, and creative application of these concepts to a variety of important problems in biological fluid dynamics and beyond."

Background:

Mory Gharib received his B.S. in mechanical engineering from Tehran University in 1975, M.S. degree from Syracuse University and his Ph.D degree in aeronautics from California Institute of Technology (Caltech) in 1983. He is currently Vice Provost for Research and the Hans W. Liepmann Professor of Aeronautics and Bio-Inspired Engineering at Caltech. His current research interests include Vortex dynamics, flow-structure interaction, flow control, cardiovascular fluid dynamics, as well as advanced flow-Imaging diagnostics. He was the first to introduce digital techniques to Particle Image velocimetry (PIV) and today all such methods are based on his pioneering approach. His 1992 seminal paper (with his student C.E. Willert) on digital PIV has had a tremendous impact on fluid mechanics, and it is the most highly cited paper in the journal of Experiments in Fluids. Gharib is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and the American Academy of Art and Sciences. He is a fellow of APS, Charter Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors (NAI), fellow of American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineering (ASME), and a fellow of The International Academy of Medical and Biological Engineering (IAMBE).
