Citation:

"For comprehensive and insightful theories and simulations of electron series resonant (ESR) diodes and ESR surface-wave plasmas, which showed how distributed slow-wave excitation might produce large area plasma discharges for processing (and other) applications.

"

Background:

Kevin J. Bowers graduated with highest distinction from Purdue University with a B.S. in electrical engineering in 1997. He obtained his Ph.D. in electrical engineering from the University of California at Berkeley in 2001. His thesis work on high frequency plasma surface waves was conducted under the direction of Professor C. K. Birdsall.

After his completing his Ph.D., Dr. Bowers joined Agere Systems (formerly the Lucent Bell Labs Microelectronics Corporation) where he has been investigating mesoscopic and nanoscopic photonic devices and device manufacturing. He has also been employed by Intel Corporation and Los Alamos National Lab. His research interests include electromagnetics, plasmas, quantum electronics and scientific computing.

In addition to this award, Dr. Bowers was the recipient of Berkeley's David J. Sakrison Memorial Prize for outstanding thesis research, a student travel award to the 50th Meeting of Nobel Laureates in Lindau Germany, a Fannie and John Hertz Foundation Fellowship, a DoD Fellowship (alternate, declined), a NSF Graduate Research Fellowship (declined) and a University of California Regents Fellowship.

Dr. Bowers is a member of the American Physical Society and the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers.
