Kevin Aylesworth
APS Congressional Fellow

Citation:

"For promoting public understanding of the problems faced by young scientists."

Background:

Kevin Aylesworth received his BS in physics from the University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point in 1983. He received his Ph.D. in experimental condensed matter physics from the University of Nebraska in 1989.

After graduation he served as a National Research Council Postdoctoral Associate at the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, DC. During his postdoc he founded the Young Scientists' Network to alert policy makers to the deteriorating job market in science. His articles on scientific employment appeared in Newsweek Focus, APS News, and Physics Today.

After his postdoc, he started his own consulting business and is the current American Physical Society Congressional Fellow. In 1995 Aylesworth co-authored a book with Sheila Tobias and Daryl Chubin called, "Rethinking Science as a Career: Perceptions and Realities in the Physical Sciences," published by the Research Corporation. He is a general councilor of the APS and was recently elected to its executive board.
