Background:

Gustav Gerber studied physics and mathematics at the Free University of Berlin and the University of Freiburg. He received a Dr. rer. nat., from the University of Freiburg in 1974 and a Habilitation in experimental physics from the University of Freiburg in 1982. Gerber was a Postdoctoral Fellow with H.P. Broida from 1974 to 1976. He has held academic positions at the University of Freiburg, the University of Kaiserslautern, and the University of Wurzburg, where he was Dean of the Faculty for Physics and Astronomy from 2004 to 2007.

Gerber has been a visiting fellow at JILA and the University of Colorado department of chemistry (1991) and a visiting Miller professor in the department of chemistry at the University of California, Berkeley (1998), and received the Japan Society for Promotion of Science Invitation Fellowship for Research in Japan (2002). He has given the Nicolet Lecture at Birmingham University (UK) (2000), the James-Franck Memorial Lecture at the Israel Academy of Sciences in Jerusalem, (2003) and the Green Lecture at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver (2004). Gerber's awards include the R.W. Pohl Prize of the German Physical Society (1994) and the Philip Morris Research Award (2000). He is a member of APS, the European Physical Society, and the German Physical Society.
