Prize Recipient

Dr. Calvin F. Quate received his BS in 1944 from the University of Utah and his Ph.D. in 1950 from Stanford. From 1949 to 1958 he worked at Bell Laboratories and from 1959 to 1961 he was employed by the Sandia Corporation. In 1961 he joined the faculty of Stanford University. He was a Senior Research Fellow of the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center ("PARC") from 1983 to 1994. At Stanford, Dr. Quate is the Leland T. Edwards Professor (Research) of Electrical Engineering and Professor (Research) of Applied Physics by Courtesy. His research interests are centered on the scanning probe microscopes.

Dr. Quate is a Guggenheim Fellow and a Fulbright Scholar, serving on the Faculty de Sciences, Montpellier, France in 1968  1969. He was elected to membership in the National Academy of Engineering in 1970, and the National Academy of Sciences in 1975. He received Rank Prize for OptoElectronics in 1982, the IEEE Medal of Honor in 1988; the President's National Medal of Science in 1992 and elected to membership in the Royal Society of London in 1995.
