Boris Altshuler

Citation:

"For his life-long struggle for democracy in Russia and for his advocacy on behalf of the rights of neglected children."

Background:

Boris Altshuler was born in 1939, in 1962 graduated from the Physics Department of the Moscow State University, Ph.D. in physics – defense of the thesis in January 1969 in the P.N. Lebedev Physical Institute.

1962-1974 – researcher in the All-Soviet Institute of Current Sources, 1974-1982 – teacher of physics, 1982-1987 – janitor because of pressure of KGB. In 1987-hitherto – Chief Researcher in the the P.N. Lebedev Physical Institute, member of Scientific Council of the Theoretical Physics Department of the Institute. Fields of endeavors are cosmology, higher dimension theories, in the last years – series of scientific papers on the study of the possibility of calculating the fundamental constants in the models of the throat-like solutions in supergravity.

B. Altshuler is a 40-years long participant of the human rights movement in Former USSR and then in Russia, during 20 years in close cooperation and friendship with Andrei Sakharov. Chief of the NGOs “Movement without Frontiers” and of the “Right of the Child” (beginning from 1996).

The Heinz R. Pagels Human Rights of Scientists Award (1998), “Man of the Year 5769” Award (2009) – by the Federation of Jewish Communities of Russia: ‘For many years human rights advocacy and humanitarian actions in favor of children’.
