Citation:

"For the detailed, theoretical description of intrabeam scattering, which has empowered major discoveries in a broad range of disciplines by a wide variety of accelerators, including hadron colliders, damping rings/linear colliders, and low emittance synchrotron light sources."

Background:

Anton Piwinski, Ph.D., completed his undergraduate work in electrotechnique at the Technical University Aachen (Germany) in 1960. Diploma in physics (1963) 1964 and 1965 process computing in industry. He received his Ph.D. in 1970, focusing on synchroton radiation. Dr. Piwinski spent the majority of his career between 1966 and 1999 conducting research at DESY in Hamburg, Germany, planning and operating the storage rings DORIS, PETRA, and HERA, improving the luminosity and the lifetime of the stored beams..From 1984 until 1986, Dr. Piwinski was a guest scientist at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland, with theoretical studies for large electron-positron collider. From 1990 until 1991, Dr. Piwinski was a guest scientist at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center at Stanford University in Palo Alto, California, investigating a crossing angle in an asymmetric storage ring. Dr. Piwinski’s research interests are beam instabilities in beam-to-beam interaction, and coupling of betatron and synchroton oscillations due to a crossing angle or dispersion, and wake fields. He is especially interested in intrabeam scattering, which are critical to proton beams, the Touschek-Effect, and electron beams. In 2005, Dr. Piwinski was awarded the U.S. Particle Accelerator School Prize for his contributions to the understanding of charged particle beams.
