Background:

Anthony Johnson is a native of Brooklyn, NY, received his B.S. in Physics in 1975 from the Polytechnic Institute of New York and his PhD. in Physics in 1981 from the City College of the City University of New York. Johnson was recently a Distinguished Member of the Technical Staff in the Photonic Circuits Research Department at AT&T Bell Laboratories, Holmdel, NJ. After 14 rewarding years at Bell Labs, he is Chair of the Federated Physics Department (1/95), joint between the New Jersey Institute of Technology and Rutgers University (Newark Campus). He is a Fellow (1996), General Councilor (94 - 97) and Executive Board Member (96-97) of the APS, an Executive Committee Member of the APS Laser Science Topical Group (93-95), and chair of the APS Committee on Minorities in Physics (92-93).

His general research is in ultrafast optical and optoelectronic phenomena, having published 55 articles, 2 book chapters and holds 4 US patents in this area. He served 6 1/2 yers as the Ultrafast Optical Phenomena Topical Editor of Optics Letters and is currently the Editor-in-Chief (95-98). He is the 1990 Program Co-Chair, 1992 Conference Co-Chair and currently 1996 Steering Committee Chair of the Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics.

Dr. Johnson is a Fellow (1991) and Board of Directors Member (93-96) of the Optical Society of America; Charter Fellow (1992) of the National Society of Black Physicists; Senior Member (1989) and Board of Governors Member (1993-1995) of the IEEE Lasers and Electro-Optics Society. He is also a member of the AAPT and the AAAS.
