Henry Primakoff Award for Early-Career Particle Physics

To recognize outstanding contributions made by physicists who are just beginning their careers, and to help promote the careers of exceptionally promising young physicists. The prize is given annually and will consist of $1,500 and a certificate citing the contributions of the recipient, plus an allowance for travel to an APS meeting to receive the award and deliver an invited lecture.

Establishment & Support

The APS Division of Particles and Fields (DPF) established the award in 2011. The award is endowed by the Henry Primakoff Lecture Fund, created by members of the physics department at the University of Pennsylvania, where Henry Primakoff was a professor.

Rules & Eligibility

This award recognizes outstanding elementary particle physics research performed by a physicist who must be within seven years of Ph.D. at the time of nomination, plus any career breaks. The research recognized could either be a single piece of work, or the sum of contributions.

Nomination & Selection Process

Serving a diverse and inclusive community of physicists worldwide is a primary goal for APS. Nominations of qualified women, members of underrepresented minority groups, and scientists from outside the United States are especially encouraged.

The deadline for submission of nominations for the 2014 award is July 1, 2013. The nomination must include:

• A letter of not more than 5,000 characters evaluating the qualifications of the nominee(s).

In addition, the nomination should include:

• A biographical sketch, including date of Ph.D.
  
• A list of the most important publications.
• At least two, but not more than four, seconding letters.
• Up to five reprints and preprints.

Nominations remain active for three years, and can be updated every year.

Letters can be signed electronically (for example, using an embedded facsimile) or physically. In the latter case they should be digitally scanned. Filenames should include the name of the nominee.
