Abstract Submission

Submission Deadline: 5:00 p.m. EDT, Friday, July 18, 2008

Email | Print

Submission Information

Abstracts submitted by APS members will be accepted for presentation in either oral or poster format. The first author is expected to present the paper. If multiple abstracts with the same first author are submitted, one paper will be assigned to the regular session and all others to the Supplemental Poster Session on Friday morning.

Submission of an abstract is taken as a representation by the submitter that they expect the first author to attend the conference.

Presentation of multiple papers, whether oral or poster, by a single person is not permitted except that the presenter of a review, invited, or tutorial talk, an education and outreach paper, or a mini-conference paper is allowed one additional abstract submission in the regular meeting program.

Submitting Abstracts

Online Web Submission Process

Contributed abstracts are limited to 1300 characters, including the title, author list, abstract body, footnotes, and spaces (about 250 words). Invited speakers should refer to their letter of invitation for instructions for abstract submission.  The limit for an invited abstract is 2000 characters. If you have questions regarding abstract submission, please contact Abstract Help.

To submit a contributed abstract using the online web submission process, an author needs to have this information ready:

  1. The number and ordering of authors and collaborators
  2. Abstract content
  3. Type and Subject Classification categories

Online Web Submission Process

Instructions on the web page will guide you through the submission process. We recommend new users try a test submission before submitting your abstract.

Submitting the Abstract

  1. Log onto http://abstracts.aps.org
  2. Select Start Abstract Submission.
  3. Select the Test Meeting (IT05) (listed at the bottom).
  4. Follow the directions online to create your own practice abstract.

When ready to submit your abstract online, select the meeting 2008 50th Annual Meeting of the Division of Plasma Physics by clicking the appropriate box. A form will be created for you. Simply input the information.

Posters

Poster Session boards are freestanding, measuring 4 feet high by 8 feet wide.

Postdeadline Submission

Abstracts received after Friday, July 18, and before Monday, September 15, will be assigned to the Postdeadline Poster Session on Friday morning, November 21. After September 15 an author wishing to present their postdeadline abstract at the annual meeting must bring a copy of it to the meeting and it will be assigned to a poster board in the Friday morning Postdeadline Poster Session.

If you have questions regarding postdeadline abstract submission, please contact Abstract Help.

Mini-Conference Guidelines for Organizers

Mini-Conferences perform a valuable function in Division of Plasma Physics (DPP) Meetings.  They provide opportunities to focus on areas of research in plasma science and interdisciplinary discourse not ordinarily covered in the regular program, and encourage participation from scientists who do not usually attend DPP Meetings.  To ensure that Mini-Conferences fulfill their mission in DPP Meetings, the 2008 Program Committee will use the following guidelines in selecting Mini-Conferences and endorsing their programs:

  1. The theme of a proposed Mini-Conference must be one that is not ordinarily covered in the regular program.  The proposal for the Mini-Conference must make a compelling argument why focus on the proposed theme will represent value added to the DPP Meeting.
  2. Mini-Conference organizers may solicit participation from selected presenters.  Mini-Conference organizers are encouraged to provide a tentative list of solicited presentations in their proposal, but they should not issue formal solicitations until the Program Committee has approved the Mini-Conference.
  3. The oral program of a Mini-Conference must include a combination of solicited and unsolicited papers.  Solicited papers should take up no more than 75% of the time allotted for a Mini-Conference.

The deadline for receiving proposals for Mini-Conferences is Friday, May 16, 2008.  In order to encourage unsolicited contributions, the approved Mini-Conferences will be announced on Friday, June 6, 2008.  Direct communications from the Mini-Conference organizers to potential participants are strongly encouraged.
  4. The Program Committee reserves the right to suggest changes in thematic content and the list of solicited presenters for a Mini-Conference to ensure scientific balance and broad participation.

There will be a limited number of mini-conferences.  Proposals should be submitted to the Program Chair, Amitava Bhattacharjee , with a copy to Saralyn Stewart (stewart@physics.utexas.edu) as early as possible, but no later than Friday, May 16. Please include the following information:

(1) Mini-conference title
(2) Mini-conference organizers/affiliations
(3) Preliminary presenters list
(4) Planned relative length of time-allocations for solicited and contributed talks
(5) Audio visual equipment request
(6) Brief description (will, or will not include a poster session)

If a mini-conference is approved for inclusion in the technical program, mini-conference papers must be submitted by Friday, July 18.  Presenters must select mini-conference subject category 11.0.0 and must include a brief mini-conference title in the Special Instructions.  Mini-conference presenters are allowed one additional first author paper submission in the regular technical program.

Note: Mini-conference presenters will be required to pay the day-to-day registration fee, or the week long APS member registration fee.

Undergraduate and High School Students Doing Research

There will be a special poster session entitled "Undergraduate/High School Research" at the annual meeting on Tuesday, November 18. For the seventh year, DPP will present awards to undergraduate students. This session provides an opportunity for students to present results from summer and thesis research, as well as meet other plasma physicists, both senior researchers and students.

Undergraduate or high school students should submit their abstracts as contributed posters following the abstract submission procedure as outlined above. Please select Category 10.0.0, Undergraduate or High School Research, from the Sorting Categories.

If you have questions about the Undergraduate/High School Poster Session, please contact Saralyn Stewart.

DPP will waive the registration fee for undergraduate or high school student presenters. Indicate "undergrad" or "high school student" on the Registration Form and fax the form to APS.  The fax number is on the form.
