Detecting and manipulating magnetic vortices, or skyrmions, in a thin layer of palladium and iron on top of a iridium crystal, using a scanning tunneling microscope (STM). The cones indicate the position and direction of the atomic magnetic moments. Skyrmions can be created and annihilated locally by injecting currents from the STM tip.
