Spin Ice Monopoles

Physicists have made analogues of magnetic monopoles in spin ice.
Competing interactions and a distinct crystal structure in spin ice produce excitations that behave like magnetic monopoles, hypothetical magnetic particles with only an isolated North or South pole.
