Deadzone in a Granular Jet Impact

A blue deadzone forms in the cross section of a granular jet striking a target.
A simulation of a stream of granular particles striking a target shows that the stream deflects into a hollow conical sheet. The dark blue portion indicates particles that are nearly stationary in the stream, confirming experiments that have revealed the formation of a “dead zone” where the grains effectively come to a stop.
