Ethics Education

Sunday, March 9
1:30 p.m. - 5:30 p.m.
La Galerie 1
New Orleans Marriott Hotel
555 Canal Street

Who Should Attend
Physics faculty, particularly those involved in program development and advising, research supervision, and teaching upper division labs; physicists in any stage of their career with an interest in issues related to the responsible conduct of research and to the interaction of physicists with the rest of society.

Tutorial Description
This workshop will begin with a discussion of the responsible conduct of research, including what standards have been established by the APS and the federal government, the perception of how well those standards are being maintained, and the variation of how the standards are applied within the physics community. The second presentation will address the obligation that the physics community has to address issues of importance to society, and the ways in which the community can address those issues. The third presentation will focus on the logistics of various approaches to ethics education, ranging from internet modules to mentoring to classroom instruction. The workshop will conclude with a discussion of case studies developed for the APS Ethics Education website.
