Advances in Neutron Scattering

Pre-registration only — no on-site registration for tutorials

Sunday, March 9
8:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
La Galerie 1
New Orleans Marriott Hotel
555 Canal Street

Who Should Attend
Scientists, postdoctoral associates, and students who want to learn about the opportunities for materials science provided by new developments in neutron scattering.

Tutorial Description
This course gives an overview of the use of neutron scattering in materials science, highlighting the scientific opportunities provided by new developments in sources and instrumentation. The recent construction of the Spallation Neutron Source at Oak Ridge makes this an ideal time to review the latest advances in neutron scattering at both accelerator and reactor sources. After a brief introduction to neutron scattering and the novel techniques now under development, the course will cover the use of neutrons in structure determination, both ordered and disordered, lattice and spin dynamics, and the study of surfaces and interfaces. No prior experience with scattering techniques will be assumed.

Topics
Advances in Neutron Scattering Instrumentation
Structural Determination Using Neutron Scattering
Neutrons as a Probe of the Dynamics of Materials
Neutron Reflectivity - the Study of Surfaces and Interfaces

Instructors
Dr. Ian Anderson, Oak Ridge National Laboratory
Prof. Simon Billinge, Michigan State University (unconfirmed)
Prof. Robert McQueeney, Iowa State University
Prof. Roger Pynn, Indiana University, Bloomington
