Grace Episcopal Church Cemetery in St. Francisville
Grace Episcopal Church Cemetery in St. Francisville

Outside the city:

Barataria section of the National Park. 45 minutes by car. ¾-mile walk way into the swamp. Also other walk ways. Canoeing can be arranged. If you have time go to Lafitte where the road ends. Local restaurants serve excellent gumbo, including alligator gumbo.

Plantation homes. There are 50 or so plantation homes mostly between New Orleans and Baton Rouge. You’ll need a car or a tour company. I recommend the Laura Plantation that includes some black history and interesting stories.

Swamp tours. Some provide transportation from the hotel. We use the Honey Island tour.

You'll need a car to visit these attractions:

Natchez, MS — charming town with many old historic antebellum homes.
St. Francisville — many historic homes
Angola prison — rodeo in Oct.
Mobile area — battleships, Bellingrath Gardens, golf (Timbercreek), Grand Hotel
Grand Isle — barrier island. The stuff around Grand Isle is interesting.
Biloxi — Gulfport area. Nearest beaches. Some remaining damage from Katrina.
Chalmette and beyond
Mouth of Mississippi
Lafayette
Acadia — see a guide book
St. Martinsville — hotel (good food) and park of Emillene
Morgan City — the bell tower
Vicksburg, MS Civil War Park
Lafitte
Avery Island — birds, home of McIlheny’s hot sauce
Emerald coast of Florida — beautiful beaches.
