Web Manager

The American Physical Society (APS), a nonprofit membership organization working to advance and diffuse the knowledge of physics, seeks a Web Manager to provide leadership and strategy for creating and maintaining websites and other digital products to meet user needs. The position is responsible for managing staff and workflows, making sites easy-to-use and attractive, and administering the content management system. Balancing a creative eye with an analytical mind and technical background is essential.


  • Build and maintain functional and easy-to-use websites.
  • Update website content, review SEO, and analyze website performance.
  • Liaise with stakeholders and marketing team to create new content and improve presentation.
  • Oversee website layout, navigation scheme, user experience, and architecture.
  • Establish priorities and monitor workflow of website updates and maintenance.
  • Ensure content is distributable to online channels and social media platforms.
  • Ensure content is accurate, up-to-date, and in compliance with copyright regulations.
  • Test websites across browsers, operating systems, and devices.
  • Maintain, configure, and troubleshoot content management system.
  • Keep track of developments in web technology.
  • Supervise and mentor web specialist.
  • Shape department staffing through recruitment, training, performance feedback, and management.
  • Serve as the point of contact for new work requests and delegate tasks to staff.

Education: Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent, in web design, information technology, computer science, communications, or other related field, required.

Experience: 5-7 years in a professional web management environment including administering content management systems and managing a team of website professionals. Experience working with associations preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Proven understanding of website standards, user experience principles, writing for the web, and information architecture.
  • Expert knowledge of HTML, CSS, SEO.
  • Working knowledge of ColdFusion, PHP, or other scripting language.
  • Demonstrated expertise with administration and development of content management systems and other website management tools.
  • Strong troubleshooting and analytical abilities.
  • Ability to interpret Google Analytics into reports and recommendations.
  • Possess an eye for clean, artful design, and superior interface design skills.
  • Expert in specialized software for website and content management such as CommonSpot, Wordpress, or Drupal.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines with versatility while staying on time and on budget.
  • Strong, polished interpersonal, written, and oral communications skills are necessary.
  • Attention to detail and outstanding organizational skills.
