Staff Science Writer

The American Physical Society (APS), a non-profit membership organization working to advance and diffuse the knowledge of physics, seeks a skilled Science Writer. This position is based at APS Headquarters in College Park, MD (near DC Metro Green Line). Reporting to the Editor of APS News, the Writer will prepare articles for APS News covering research results, conferences, APS programs, and other developments of interest to the physics community.


  • Researches and writes articles for APS News, as assigned by the Editor of APS News.
  • Assists the Editor in identifying trends and topics of relevance to the APS membership and the physics community that might develop into articles for APS News.
  • Assists the Editor in editing articles provided by freelance writers and APS staff.
  • Covers major APS conferences and other important meetings, as assigned by the Editor.
  • Occasional overnight travel required.


  • Must have at least a Bachelor’s degree in journalism or a science field plus minimum one year of experience in journalism and writing on science topics
  • Superlative written and personal communication skills
  • Ability to conduct interviews in person, by e-mail, and by telephone
  • Skill in taking photographs, recording and editing podcasts and videos a plus
  • Ability to work independently and meet deadlines
  • Computer skills and high level of proficiency in standard office software are essential
