Head of Marketing

The American Physical Society (APS), a nonprofit membership organization working to advance and diffuse the knowledge of physics, seeks a communications professional for the position Head of Marketing. The Head of Marketing will provide leadership and strategy for the Society’s marketing efforts to increase membership, create awareness, maximize engagement, and grow revenue. The position is responsible for managing department staffing and workflows, executing successful marketing campaigns, managing social media strategy, overseeing email marketing, and leading creative production/vision.

Essential Functions:

  • Develop a multi-channel marketing strategy that drives the Society’s objectives
  • Oversee development and execution of marketing and communications plans across all channels inclusive of web properties, social channels, video platforms, email, media/PR, SEO, and paid search
  • Collaborate with internal clients to fully understand objectives, offer insights, recommendations, and solutions to marketing challenges
  • Manage marketing team and monitor day-to-day project execution
  • Interface with CRM to produce targeted and effective marketing strategies
  • Oversee creative design process and video production to ensure successful outcomes
  • Produce valuable content for the Society’s online presence and marketing materials
  • Monitor campaign progress and performance, submit performance reports, gain insight and assess against goals
  • Ensure consistency of look, tone, and feel of brand and adherence to style guide
  • Assist in maintaining the Society’s favorable public image and brand reputation by monitoring exposure and sentiment
  • Lead the strategy and management of the APS social media presence including generating engaging content, ensuring adherence to best practices, responding to queries, and moderating user-generated content
  • Oversee email marketing strategy and policy while ensuring accurate email communications, minimizing unsubscribes, and providing direction for list management and template design
  • Shape department staffing through recruitment, mentoring, training, and performance feedback
  • Verify completeness, quality, and accuracy of team’s work
  • Keep abreast of trends and best practices in marketing, email marketing, video production, and social media
  • Manage and recommend department resources including hardware, software, and other creative tools, ensuring adequate maintenance of equipment, updating of software, and ordering of supplies
  • Develop and maintain operating procedures and documentation for department workflow
  • Willingness and ability to deputize for Director of Communications, as needed

Education: Bachelor’s degree, master’s degree preferred, in marketing, communications, or other related field, required.

Experience: 8-12 years of experience in marketing or communications with leadership experience of multi-discipline communications function including marketing, email marketing, social media, brand management, and graphic design. Experience managing large team in a multi-tasked, detail- and deadline-oriented environment.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Excellent writing and proofreading skills
  • Advanced experience with project, social, and email management tools
  • Experience developing and implementing creative marketing solutions
  • Expert in specialized software for social media management, email delivery, and statistics such as Google Analytics, Sprout Social, Hootsuite, and MailChimp
  • Excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills
  • Strong, polished interpersonal, written, and oral communications skills are necessary
  • Strong knowledge of using customer relationship management software to reach marketing goals
  • Attention to detail and outstanding organizational skills; ability to manage multiple projects/deadlines within budget
  • Ability to understand and leverage staff talent, allocate resources, coordinate people and tasks
  • Understand and apply supervisory principles involved in motivating people, resolving conflicts and modeling proper conduct
  • Proficient in commonly used technology platforms and software, including Google Business Applications, Gmail, Adobe Creative Suite, project management software, word processing, and spreadsheets
  • Proficient in electronic file organization and managing electronic communications and workflows
  • Expert in project management practices and software such as Basecamp
