Industrial Physicist Program Manager

The American Physical Society (APS) seeks a dynamic and personable industrial physicist to fill the position of Industrial Physics Program Manager. Based at APS Headquarters in College Park, MD (near DC Metro Green Line), this is a part-time (50%) position reporting directly to the Society’s Executive Officer.

Responsibilities

  • Working with the APS Education & Diversity Dept. to garner valuable information on physicists in industry and making it available to students and postdocs, as well as organizing and hosting webinars for particular segments of the industrial community on topics of interest to this cohort
  • Writing a monthly column in APS News featuring important issues for the industrial physics community
  • Being an articulate liaison to the APS Membership Dept., the Committee on Careers and Professional Development, the Forum on Industrial and Applied Physics, and the Forum on Graduate Student Affairs, and understanding the needs of the industrial community with respect to APS (and other) journals
  • Developing communication strategies to effectively reach early-career physicists and younger members
  • Gathering information to learn why some industrial members view APS as their professional "home" and others do not, then using that insight to work towards making APS more of a home for industrial physicists
  • Exploring professional development activities APS might want to offer to members; making more industries aware of the benefits of hiring physicists and promoting the existence of the APS job board and job fair activities to the members.

Qualifications

  • PhD degree in physics or closely related science and at least 3 years of experience working as a physicist in industry required.
  • Work experiences in multiple companies and roles within the industrial sector highly desirable.
  • Must relate well to people, work collaboratively, establish relationships and understand the various "cultures" that industrial members find themselves in and understand the concerns of younger members.
  • Ability to use various communication technologies is needed and must be adept at using Microsoft Office Suite products, in particular Word and Power Point.
  • Some overnight travel to conduct or attend meetings is required.
  • Needs to be familiar with issues currently affecting the industrial physics community.
  • Must be open and able to learn new skills needed to carry out programmatic objectives.
  • Ability to work on several projects at one time and take initiative to develop and support projects, with or without direct supervision, is necessary

To apply, send cover letter with salary requirement, resume, and a list of professional references to the attention of the Director of Human Resources via e-mail: personnel@aps.org.
