Deputy Executive Officer
The American Physical Society (APS), the premier membership association for physicists, seeks a dynamic and proven manager of people and programs to fill the position of Deputy Executive Officer. This full-time position is based at APS Headquarters in College Park, MD (near DC Metro Green Line) and reports to the APS Executive Officer.The Deputy Executive Officer provides day-to-day management and oversight of a portion of the core Society activities performed at APS Headquarters and serves as principal planning officer to develop and coordinate implementation strategies for APS. Essential functions are:
- directly supervising key senior staff, and overseeing program budgets; and supporting the Executive Officer in her coordinating role with the Treasurer/Publisher and Editor-in-Chief;
- developing a “Communications Department”, bringing together people across the organization who are involved in various aspects of communications, and providing leadership on new directions in communications activities;
- working closely with the Executive Officer to assure the smooth functioning of the organization and to advance implementation of the APS strategic plan goals and objectives; and
- providing representation on behalf of the Executive Officer and APS to internal APS governance units and committees and to the broader physics community, as appropriate.
PhD degree in physics or physics-related science and demonstrated senior staff and programs management experience in a multi-faceted organization concerned with physics and/or where physics plays a critical role are required. Must have an in-depth knowledge of at least one sector of the physics community and an appreciation for the diversity and strength of the entire community. Excellent interpersonal skills, management skills, demonstrated record of collegiality, strong writing and oral communications skills, program planning and budgeting skills, and familiarity with communications/media programs are necessary.
