Bridge Programs Project Manager
The American Physical Society (APS) seeks a dynamic and personable science professional to fill the position of APS Bridge Program Project Manager based at APS Headquarters in College Park, MD (near DC Metro Green Line). The APS Bridge Project Manager will provide national leadership in developing, organizing, and implementing elements of the APS Bridge Program (APS-BP) that has a goal of increasing the number of underrepresented minorities receiving doctoral degrees in physics.
Responsibilities:
- Developing, vetting, and improving policies governing the APS-BP
- Developing and fostering relationships with students and faculty at all types of institutions
- Organizing national meetings to help education leaders understand and reduce barriers faced by underrepresented minority students in pursuing doctoral education in physics, and broadly fostering networking of individuals to share effective practices and advance project goals
- Providing mentoring for students seeking to explore graduate education in physics
- Conducting literature reviews and analysis of known barriers that limit minority participation in graduate programs; and helping supervise research questions that identify barriers and developing recommendations to improve practices in the physics community.
Qualifications:
- PhD in physics or related science discipline required
- Experience and compassion in dealing with issues faced by minorities in undergraduate and graduate education in physics
- Excellent inter-personal skills needed to effectively interact with physics education leaders
- Experience in developing and assessing education research questions is highly valued
- Able to read and synthesize overviews of relevant subject areas
- Ability to travel is important
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills are necessary.
